The Oklahoma Highway Patrol was hard at work this Labor Day to prevent deadly accidents on area lakes.

Trooper Jansen Idlett is one of 28 marine enforcement troopers who patrol 38 Oklahoma lakes.

He said this summer has been better safety-wise than recent summers.

Lake Thunderbird averages a couple drownings each year, and so for this year there haven’t been any, and boating while intoxicated charges are also down this year, Idlett said.

“It’s been a slower year for us and we appreciate that. We would rather the people come out and visit us and take the initiative and be responsible on their own and we don’t have to be involved in that way,” he said.

He said he and other marine officers are now wearing body cameras for the first time.

“It’s much better to have camera evidence than he said she said,” he said.
