Dodgers: BerryHill Named PCL Manager Of The Year

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

Oklahoma City Dodgers manager Damon Berryhill has been named the 2015 Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year, the league announced today.

Berryhill, 51, is in his first season in Oklahoma City and in his second season managing at the Triple-A level in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

He was voted the PCL’s top manager via a balloting of the league’s 16 field managers and media representatives from each PCL city.

The Dodgers currently lead the PCL with an 85-55 record and their 85 wins have established a new team record for Oklahoma City with four games remaining in the regular season. The Dodgers clinched the American Northern Division title Wednesday and will advance to the postseason for the eighth time since joining the PCL in 1998. The Dodgers have achieved these milestones under Berryhill while experiencing more than 320 roster transactions so far this season.

Finishing second to Berryhill in the Manager of the Year voting this season was Fresno’s Tony DeFrancesco, who managed in Oklahoma City while the team was a Houston Astros affiliate from 2011-14. Round Rock’s Jason Wood finished third.

Berryhill is the second Oklahoma City manager to receive the award, following Greg Biagini who won the honor in 1999.

Berryhill, a former catcher from Orange County, Calif., also managed in the PCL last season, guiding the Albuquerque Isotopes in 2014. Prior to his time in Triple-A, he served as manager for the Rookie-advanced Ogden Raptors for five seasons, leading the Raptors to the Pioneer League playoffs four times. He began his managerial career in 2008 with the Texas Rangers’ High-A affiliate Bakersfield Blaze.

Now in his eighth season, Berryhill currently owns a career 416-385 managerial record.

Prior to managing, Berryhill worked as a minor league catching coordinator for the Texas Rangers (2005-07) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2003-04). He began his coaching career in 2002 for the Los Angeles Angels’ Single-A affiliate in Rancho Cucamonga.

Berryhill spent 10 seasons in the Major Leagues from 1987-97, playing for the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants. He was a member of Atlanta’s 1992 National League Championship team, setting career highs in home runs and RBI that season. During the 1992 World Series, his three-run home run off Jack Morris was the difference in the Braves’ 3-1 win against the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 1.

Berryhill attended Laguna Beach High School and Orange Coast College. He was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 1984 amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs and made his Major League debut with Chicago on Sept. 5, 1987.

The Dodgers wrap up the regular season with a four-game series against the Memphis Redbirds, starting at 7:05 tonight at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Oklahoma City will then play American Southern Division champion Round Rock in a best-of-five playoff series beginning Wednesday, Sept. 9, in Round Rock. The first two games will be played at Dell Diamond and the final three games will be played at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, starting Friday, Sept. 11, with games four and five to follow, if necessary, on Sept. 12 and 13.

Tickets for the remainder of the Dodgers’ regular-season games, as well as the first round of the playoffs, are available through the box office on S. Mickey Mantle Drive, by calling (405) 218-1000, or ordering through okcdodgers.com.
