NEW YORK CITY -

Some fast-food restaurants could soon be required by law to make kid's meals healthier. Researchers and parents agree, this is a good thing.

Many fast-food restaurants already offer healthy alternatives for kids, but under the bill, New York City fast food restaurants would be required to make children's meals healthier.

The proposed bill targets meals that come with a toy. It would mandate the meal be under 500 calories and include a serving of fruit, vegetables, or whole grain.

In fact, a new study shows the bill could have a positive impact on children's health. Researchers looked at meals purchased at McDonald's, Wendy's, and Burger King, and found the bill would lead to children consuming less fat and sodium.

They say until now, posting calories at fast food restaurants has not helped enough in the fight against childhood obesity.

Similar legislation on kid's meals was recently passed in California.
