By a score of 2-0 the Oklahoma soccer team downed in-state rival Oklahoma State in a non-conference Bedlam battle Friday night. The match was played inside the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.

The win marked OU’s first of the season after dropping two double overtime heartbreakers on opening weekend. Fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said the difference for his team came in attention to the details.

”We pride ourselves on doing our job, nothing more and nothing less,” Potter explained. “The players tonight fulfilled that, and so we were on the right side of the result. Both games in the past, we put ourselves in a hole by going a goal down, but obviously tonight we worked in our favor. Most importantly it’s a win, and that’s important at this time of the year to weather the storm from last weekend.”

The victory marked the Sooners' fifth overall in the Bedlam series and first in Stillwater since Oct. 28, 2005, a 3-2 win. OU also defeated the Cowgirls by a 2-0 mark in the first meeting between the two squads last season.

The Sooners jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on Friday as freshman midfielder Kaylee Dao recorded her first career goal 18 seconds into the match, giving OU a burst of momentum. OSU sophomore goalkeeper Michela Ongaro deflected the shot, but it rolled in for the Sooners. Senior forward Devin Barrett provided the assist on the score.

In the 61st minute, freshman forward Emily Parker tallied her first career score from 15 yards out to give the Sooners the 2-0 advantage. All four of OU’s goals this season have been scored by newcomers, including three by true freshmen.

Despite allowing 18 shots, the Sooners looked in control the entire night. Junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade corralled nine saves in the shutout victory. OSU’s Ongaro grabbed one save.

The match was filled with offense as the two squads combined for 29 total shots. The Sooners had 11 total, including five from junior midfielder Shiloh Price.

The Sooners will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 30 as they welcome Little Rock to Norman for their home opener. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. CT start.
