A convict who escaped custody Tuesday near Ada, Oklahoma, has died from a self-inflicted gunshot following a police chase in Pontotoc  County.

A convict who escaped custody Tuesday near Ada, Oklahoma, has died from a self-inflicted gunshot following a police chase in Pontotoc  County.

Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian confirmed with CBS News affiliate KXII, that Johnnie Hawkins, who is also a former Tupelo reserve police officer, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday on the corner of S.E. 10th and Ross Medow Road in Pontotoc County.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections began searching for Hawkins after he illegally removed a GPS monitoring device. He is convicted of unauthorized use of a patrol car and gun theft.
