Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell announced on Friday that he has Stage 1 lyphoma.

Farrell said that he would take a medical leave and should begin chemotherapy next week.

The 53-year-old Farrell says bench coach Torey Lovullo will manage the Red Sox in his absence. Boston has struggled all season and currently sits in last place in the AL East at 50-64.

Long before Farrell led the Red Sox to the World Series championship in 2013, he pitched for Oklahoma State from 1981-84. Farrell later returned to Stillwater to coach. He's a member of the Cowboy Baseball Hall of Fame.
