A man accused of killing his 2-year-old stepdaughter was formally charged Monday with first degree murder.

24-year-old Tyler Young has been in the Cleveland County jail since last Wednesday.

Young appeared calm and collected as he listened to the judge read the first degree murder charge against him at the Cleveland County courthouse. He kept his head down through part of the arraignment but then had questions for the judge about when he could meet with his attorney.

Young's family has stated from the beginning that he would never do anything intentionally to hurt his 2-year-old stepdaughter Elizabeth.

But now, it will be up for a judge and jury to decide if what he did amounted to murder.

Young was arrested by Norman police last Wednesday after he was questioned several times by police at both the hospital and at the apartment he shared with his stepdaughter and her mother, who he just married in June.

Police and ambulance crews were called to this apartment complex off Dewey Avenue last Sunday, after Young called 911 saying he was home alone with Elizabeth and she was was unresponsive.

According to court papers, Young originally said his stepdaughter fell and hit her head in the bathtub, and that he called for help and then began performing CPR.

But police say at the jail, he changed his story three different times. Monday, the district attorney charged Young with first degree murder, claiming Young willfully or maliciously injured and or used unreasonable force on the child.

The charge sheet said the blunt force trauma to his stepdaughter's head and torso caused her death.

Young has a bond motion hearing set for Thursday morning. Now, he is being held without bond at the Cleveland County jail.

During the arraignment, Young told the judge he had spoken with an attorney on Friday, but the judge went ahead and assigned a court appointed attorney until a decision could be made on who will represent Young in this case.
