A man died after being shot by an Ardmore police officer Sunday morning, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported.

Shortly before 10 a.m., a woman told police her son was suicidal. When officers were in the 1000 block of Bailey Street, they found Eric Thompkins, 41, outside the home, OSBI reported.

Police said the man ignored officers' commands and pulled out what appeared to be a handgun, OSBI reported.

One officer shot Thompkins. Thompkins was taken to a hospital in Ardmore where he died. Officers were told Thompkins may have ingested a large amount of rat poison before officers arrived at the home, OSBI reported.

OSBI agents will investigate the officer-involved shooting. The name of the Ardmore police officer was not released Sunday.
