For the past two decades, his job has been to save lives. Now, an Oklahoma fire chief could be in danger of losing his.
Wade Guyer, 41, has been Drumright’s fire chief for four years and has been a firefighter for 20 years. Drumright’s about 75 miles northeast of Oklahoma City.
He has plenty to live for. He has a wife, an adult daughter from a previous marriage and two young children.
In May, doctors diagnosed Guyer with something called Burkitt’s Leukemia-Lymphoma. It’s a blood cancer, and it can be an aggressive killer.
Guyer just finished the second of three grueling chemotherapy sessions. He’s lost 50 pounds, but says he’s determined to prevail.
“I’m gonna beat this, and I’m gonna come back,” he said from Drumright Fire Department Tuesday afternoon. “I’m a fighter.”
A well-organized volunteer group has already held fundraisers for Guyer’s family. There will be softball tournament this Saturday in Drumright.
