Police are investigating a case of vulgar vandalism in southwest Norman. A handful of residents woke up to racist and explicit marks and symbols painted on homes and cars.

"The ‘N’ word,” resident Linda Brabson said.

It was plastered across the hood of Brabson’s car in spray paint.

"When I first saw it, it was kind of scary,” she said.

Brabson and her husband have lived in their neighborhood about four years, but the word that's got them scared has been around for ages.

"We're an interracial couple,” she said. “So to see something like that it made you feel like you were being targeted."

Whoever did it took gold spray paint to six vehicles and two garage doors. Police believe it happened sometime between 12 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. Friday.

"You never know what type of person it was,” she said. “If it was just a prank for kids or if it was someone that really had some kind of hate in their heart."

Police aren't sure who is responsible, but despite the vulgar words and symbols they used, detectives don't believe it is race related.

"It appeared to be pretty random,” Norman Police Lt. Brent Barbour said. "It didn't seem to match the victims. The victims seemed to be of every origin."

However, Linda and her husband seem to be the exception.

"It was a very cowardly thing to do and very insensitive, and they really need help,” she said.

Police say if you saw anything suspicious in that area or live near where this happened and have surveillance cameras, they want to hear from you.
