Your 2 Cents: Gun Safety Education In Schools?

The Nicoma Park police chief is urging schools to teach gun safety in light of the accidental shooting of a 10-year-old in his town.

I agree, and the National Rifle Association has a program that's already being used in some districts.

Pam in Shawnee said, "I think that is one of the best ideas I have heard in a long time."

Rick in Midwest City said, "They teach kids to stay away from power lines, gas leak and fire, so add gun safety to the mix cause it sure can't hurt."

But Robert of Oklahoma City said, "First and foremost, gun safety must be taught at home."

Amanda in Yukon said, "You aren't going to wait until someone is an addict to tell them drugs are bad, so why wait until a child is around guns to teach them the dangers."

Kenna writes, "As a former teacher, I think it is a great idea. If doing so saves the life of only one child ... it is worth it."

But Jessica points out, "Schools are having a hard enough time teaching the 'three R's' and need to stop redefining the curricula with every pet project that comes along."

Susie writes, "It needs to be taught mainly in city schools the ones in the country most of these kids grow up hunting."

Finally, Cheryl in Edmond said, "Law enforcement officers can teach our kids gun safety and also let our kids see that the police are their friends."
