I have to admit I did a bit of a double take when I heard the Nicoma Park police chief putting forth the idea of teaching gun safety in our public schools.
He and his officers have been dealing with a 10-year-old boy who was shot in the face when he and his brothers stumbled across a handgun and it accidentally went off.
But as I started to research it I learned that a lot of school districts across the country have been teaching gun safety to children.
And a lot of districts in Oklahoma, especially rural districts have been.
The National Rifle Association has long had the Eddie the Eagle GunSafe Program. They don't call it gun safety, but an accident prevention program.
Some gun control groups equate Eddie the Eagle to Joe Camel with feathers, saying he makes guns seem cool. I didn't really get that out of it.
And apparently neither did the State of the Louisiana.
Gov. Bobby Jindal just signed a bill into law allowing the gun safety course into the classroom.
With gun sales spiking in Oklahoma, putting our children through an accident prevention program seems to make sense.
What are your thoughts?
