Residents in Midwest City near El Reno Avenue and N Douglas Boulevard said the streets on that side of town are safe.

But Tamilia King said she is now concerned for the kids in the area after an overnight homicide on St. George Way.

“It’s quiet, and just to know that something like that happened, as quiet as it is, it’s scary,” King said.

A few places down from her, police said a paraplegic man was beaten and his father was killed.

“So for it to be near my home, that is very terrifying. And I’m usually just here alone with me and my daughter, so that’s pretty huge,” King said.

Midwest City police Chief Brandon Clabes said the call came in about 1:45 a.m. Saturday at 8755 St. George Way.

The victim's 30-year-old son was talking with an acquaintance inside their home when their conversation turned into an altercation, Midwest City police said.

The 51-year-old man heard the commotion and went to help his son. That's when he was killed and the suspects ran off.

Saturday, police said they have at least one person in custody.

“We’re still actively seeking additional people in this homicide,” Clabes said.

Some said he was just trying to protect his child.

King said she had never met the victim, but this tragedy still struck a nerve, even giving her a reason to take her family somewhere else.

“When you think you’re in your home, you think you’re safe and sound,” she said. “It makes me want to leave.”

Midwest City police officers are investigating the homicide with the Oklahoma City police.
