The July 16 attacks that left four Marines and a sailor dead devastated many, including an Oklahoma City police detective.

Ronnie Waugh is a Dallas native who has worked for the Oklahoma City Police Department for 13 years.  In 1988, he became a United States Marine, and served in Operation Desert Storm.

Shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday, Waugh and a dozen others, left police headquarters for a walk.

Their destination was more than eight miles away.  Waugh came up with the idea to walk from police headquarters to the Marine recruiting center at Town Center Mall in Midwest City.

Waugh wanted to do it to send a message to the families of the dead.

“I want to get this out to the families somehow that we’re here, we support you,” he said shortly before they departed.

The group walked through downtown, through Bricktown and onto El Reno.

Thanks to a police escort and a few water breaks, the group made it to their destination just after noon.

“It’s emotional," Waugh said. "Glad it’s over, but we could have kept goin'.”
