A Norman woman who says the air conditioning in her Apple Creek apartment has been blowing nothing but hot air all week turns to News 9 for help. And Apple Creek has been on our radar before.

Megan Webb says she’s lived at Apple Creek 13 months.  She said she’s complained to the main office every day this week about the heat. She showed a News 9 crew her thermostat that indicated it was well over 90 degrees in her unit Thursday and Friday.

Webb said she got the runaround from Apple Creek managers all week.  Thursday, News 9’s Steve Shaw told her to file a formal complaint with the city of Norman.   Friday morning, the city sent an inspector to Webb’s second floor unit.  Webb says the inspector then went to the main office and an hour later an Apple Creek employee showed up to install a window unit air conditioner in her bedroom.

But that is only a temporary fix.

News 9 talked to a woman who lives across the hall from Webb.  She said she was hospitalized recently because of a mold problem in her unit.  She showed News 9 an air conditioning vent that is used to shoot air into her apartment.  It clearly was very dirty.

Megan Webb shared a piece of advice for anyone thinking about moving into Apple Creek Apartments. “Listen to these stories; know what you are getting yourself into.  And make sure you know your rights as a tenant.”

News 9 tried to talk to an Apple Creek manager Friday afternoon, someone from inside the main office literally locked the front door just as Steve Shaw was about to open it.

In early June, Steve Shaw tried to talk to a manager after former Apple Creek tenant News 9 examples of mold inside a unit. That manager chose to call the police and kick News 9 out of the office.

Apple Creek Apartments is owned by the same California-based company that owns Summit Ridge Apartments in Oklahoma City.  News 9 has sparred with them at least twice in the past two years for mold and air conditioning problems.

Going forward, any apartment with issues like this should contact whatever municipality they live in, file a complaint, and get it on the record.
