A special committee is getting specific with a way to fund a new Oklahoma County jail.
The deteriorating structure has been a hot button issue in Oklahoma City for some time. Some people have touted the Oklahoma County Jail as the "worst jail in America" because of the conditions inside.
Now, a special committee recommends Oklahoma County commissioners ask voters to support a 1-cent sales tax increase to fund a new $360 million detention facility.
Earlier this year, inmates clogged the plumbing system. It's just one of several issues the jail has seen over the years.
Last year, a pipe burst on the second floor and a sewer line in the basement collapsed. Conditions like this recently led to protests by those who have family inside the jail.
"We don't expect jail to be a pleasant experience, we don't expect it to be a fun place to be, but we do that it should be a sanitary place," said Ginny Sain, whose cousin is in the jail.
We'll let you know if voters are asked to decide on the proposal.
