Tulsa Police rescued an infant from a burning apartment and arrested her mother in connection to a stabbing Saturday. Police say the mother left chicken strips cooking in oil then left to go to a neighbor's house.

Officers were called to the Sunset Plaza Apartments at 262 East Independence Street around 2:30 p.m. after someone reported a stabbing. Montrenique Morris was identified as a suspect, police say. While responding to that call, they learned of a house fire at Morris' residence in the 2100 block of North Xanthus.

Police say Officer Brandon Jarrett went to the house and saw smoke coming from the attic vents. He heard a child crying and forced his way into the house, rescuing the 10-month-old girl.

Police say they found Morris next door, and she told them she was cooking her food on high so it would cook more quickly, then left to use a neighbor's phone.

"The grease in the pan quickly caught on fire, leaving the child in a burning structure behind a door with an engaged deadbolt," records state.

They baby was admitted to the hospital for observation but is doing well, according to police.

Morris was arrested for child neglect, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of marijuana and two outstanding warrants. The warrants were for larceny from a retailer and assault with body fluids.
