A stabbing suspect has been arrested following a 5-hour standoff with Edmond police Thursday morning.

According to police, at about 2:45 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to the report of a stabbing at a mobile home in the 600 block of Vista Lane. After being stabbed four times, the victim, 40-year-old Christopher Hampton, ran into another mobile home and asked the neighbor to call 911.

Edmond Police said Hampton told officers he and Smith were drinking together inside the mobile home when Smith attacked him and that he had no idea why.

Hampton underwent surgery at OU Medical Center. Police said he was stabbed in the chest, abdomen, back and arm.

When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Tyler Smith, reportedly barricaded himself inside a mobile home. Police said they evacuated the mobile home next door.

The SWAT team and Edmond Bomb Squad responded to the scene.

Matthew Williams lives next door to Smith and witnessed the SWAT team make their way inside the home.

“I was quite surprised, I mean it is something that in the back of my mind I definitely could’ve imagined would happen but certainly did not expect it this morning,” said McWilliams

At about 7:45 a.m., Edmond police told News 9 that Smith has been taken into custody. They used several PA announcements to get him out. Ultimately he surrendered when police used a rescue vehicle to enter the mobile home.

Smith was booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on a complaint of assault with a deadly weapon.

A woman and child were also inside the mobile home. They are not injured.  Smith's relationship to them and victim is not being released yet.
