Woman Charged With Mutilating Body Declared Competent

A judge declared Shaynna Sims competent Wednesday morning, so the case against her will move forward.

Sims is charged with attacking a woman's body in a casket at a funeral home in May.

Prosecutors say Sims cut the victim's face and removed her breast and toe.

The judge ordered Sims to be evaluated by a forensic psychologist, and the judge said, based on that report, Sims is competent to move forward with the case.

Sims was already on a deferred sentence for misdemeanor assault. Courthouse surveillance video caught Sims run into a woman in the hallway; she initially claimed the woman attacked her.

A month after that, prosecutors said Sims went to the funeral home, where the family of Tabitha Lynch was holding a viewing for her after she died from health complications.

They said while at Lynch's casket, Sims cut Lynch's face and removed a breast and a toe.

Sims was originally let out on bond as long as she didn't leave Muskogee County. The judge revoked that bond and sent Sims to jail after witnesses said Sims showed up at the apartment complex where the victim's children live.

Sims' original attorney asked the judge for a competency evaluation, saying he had "difficulty in developing a rational defense to these charges" based on what he called Sims' "irrational delusions."

He said her family reported she "has a history of bi-polar and schizophrenia." He said she wasn't able to "rationally assist in the preparation of her defense."

That attorney later withdrew from the case and a new attorney stepped in. He said people have been too quick to assume Sims is guilty and have said terrible things about her on social media.

"The public can have any opinion they want of her outside the courthouse but inside this courthouse and inside these courtrooms, she's presumed innocent until she's found guilty or pled guilty," Attorney Chad Greer said.

Sims' next court date is in September, where a judge will decide if there's enough evidence against her to order her to stand trial for the charges.
