A group of sports enthusiasts are challenging the city.

The Oklahoma City Disc Golf Association started an online petition to raise awareness about the possible deconstruction of the course at Will Rogers Park.

More than 2,300 signatures are on the petition to ”Save the disc golf course” as of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"It's an historic course and not something you can replace," said Cameron Kaspereit, OKC Disc Golf Association president.

He said his first round of disc golf was at Will Rogers and still enjoys playing the course.

Only now, Kaspereit said his game is threatened by a new opponent – Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department.

"Our major concern is the potential that parks could remove half of Will Rogers disc golf course," Kaspereit said.

The city informed him of plans to remove a majority of the 18-hole disc golf course to make way for Maps 3 funded bike trails.

The trails would wind through the park as part of a plan to connect Lake Hefner with the downtown corridor.

"We need more disc golf courses and losing even nine holes in one would be a detriment to the community," Kaspereit said.

They are not opposed to the trails but would like the park to have both options for recreation.

Jennifer McClintock with Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation said there are several misconceptions circulating in the community.

She said the project would impact four holes and there are no definite plans to remove any holes.

"It would have some type of impact on the disc golf course but not the type people are talking about," McClintock said.

The City is considering several options including relocating the holes.

"We just have to see what’s going to work best with in the park itself," McClintock said.

She said the idea is to revitalize the park while preserving its history and the city hopes to find a solution that works for everyone.

"We know there are a lot of avid followers of disc golf but we need to maximize use of our park lands for all of our citizens and not just a specific group," McClintock said.
