Lightning struck at least three homes across the metro Monday night, causing significant damage.

“All of a sudden it sounded like a plane crashed into the top of our house,” Kim Koumbis said.

In Mustang, Kim and John Koumbis were watching television when lightning struck their home.

“Came out the front door and at that point, I looked up there and there were flames shooting out the house of like five to seven feet,” Koumbis explained.

She immediately called 911 and the Mustang Fire Department got the fire out quickly. Friends and family rushed over to help the Koumbises load up their pets and get out safely.

“I've never seen such a light show in my house as what happened when the lightning hit,” Koumbis told News 9.

Koumbis said she cringes now when she sees lightning.

“I was nervous out here every time that it lightninged (sic) because after that point, the storm rolled in and so it was pouring rain,” Koumbis said.

The Koumbis family is now working with their insurance adjuster to figure out the total damage, but they say it will be significant.

At a home in the 1400 block of Sunway in Oklahoma City, the homeowner was not home when lightning struck at 1:30 a.m. The attic smoldered until 7 a.m. when neighbors saw smoke and called 911.

Another home in Piedmont near NW Expressway and Northwood is a total loss after a lightning strike. The family was out of town when it happened.
