Ten people died as a result of traffic accidents in Oklahoma during the Independence Day holiday weekend, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.
From 6 p.m. Thursday to 5:59 a.m. Monday, these fatalities included four drivers, two motorcyclists, one motorcycle passenger and three pedestrians.
During the holiday weekend, three ENDUI vans were used to conduct saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints at three locations in Cherokee, McCurtain and Oklahoma counties, troopers said.
Authorities made 52 driving under the influence arrests as a result of the mobile testing vehicles' sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols, troopers said.
“We had a very successful weekend as far as the number of DUI arrests made,” said OHP Lt. Troy German. “But despite our best efforts, there are still 10 people who will never see their families again due to collisions, and there are still several people in critical condition so that number may go up.”
During the same time in 2014, 11 fatalities were reported and five of those deaths were alcohol- and/or drug-related.
Troopers said it is too early to determine what role alcohol or drugs played in the crashes during the recent holiday weekend.
