Edmond is dealing with a massive washout after all the rain overnight.

Six inches of rain fell in three hours, creating flash flooding and damage that now has a stretch of Santa Fe Avenue blocked off.

An Edmond resident noticed the washout on Santa Fe overnight before anyone got hurt.

“This is by far the worst damage we have,” said Casey Moore with the City of Edmond.

The washout swept the road away and torqued the drainage pipe in the process.

“We believe the water was coming up over the road last night, which is quite a ways up from where this creek normally runs,” Moore said.

Santa Fe is closed in both directions from Sorghum Mill Road all the way up to Waterloo Road. Luckily, there are not many homes that have entrances along this road, but the blockades are not keeping out the onlookers.

“We just came up to check this out and man, this is bad stuff,” said Edmond resident Scotty Louderback.

The Louderback family lives nearby and wanted to see the damage for themselves.

“I'm just thankful there weren't any cars coming last night because you could have lost a whole family down there,” Louderback said.  “I mean, easily if they had driven into that little hole right here, they would have drowned within seconds,” he added.

The washout is a perfect example of why first responders say, “Turn around, don't drown.”

“If this water was coming up over the road last night, you don't know what's underneath that water and sometimes it may even be nothing,” Moore told News 9.

Emergency crews had to do water rescues in some high water areas around Edmond. Santa Fe is not typically a problem area, but with that much rain in such a short period of time, the city was not surprised.

“Right now we are dry and we are sunny, so hopefully our crews can get out and make the repairs they need to make,” Moore explained.

Crews are already worked on a temporary fix for Santa Fe through the day Friday.

Around 6:45 p.m., the City of Edmond said the temporary repairs had been completed and the road is now reopened.
