Tulsa Reserve Deputy Bob Bates will return to court in July after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing Friday. Bates is charged with first-degree manslaughter in the death of Eric Harris, a suspect in a drug and illegal firearms investigation.

A preliminary hearing usually presents the facts to determine if there is enough evidence for the accused to stand trial.

Bates' attorney Clark Brewster said the shooting was caught on tape, and Bates has always admitted he fired the fatal shot, so a preliminary hearing would be a waste of time and resources.

Bates' next court appearance is expected to be on July 13, 2015.
