Canadian County investigators have identified a man accused of stealing diesel fuel from a school in rural Canadian County.

About 7 a.m. on June 16, witness statements and surveillance footage showed a white man was seen stealing fuel from Maple School, Canadian County Undersheriff Chris West said.

About a week after the theft, Cody Wayne Williams, 33, of Faye, confessed to Canadian County investigators to stealing the fuel from the school and ramming his vehicle into a school employee's vehicle to stop the employee from following him, West said.

During the investigation, Canadian County officials determined that Williams ditched his pickup after the theft and called the Dewey County Sheriff's Office to falsely report his pickup stolen from his home to avoid suspicion.

Investigators waited to interview Williams until after he had been transferred from Dewey County jail to Custer County jail, West said.

Williams is in the Custer County jail on an outstanding Custer County warrant of contempt of court stemming from his failure to pay child support. He will be transferred to Canadian County jail to face complaints of larceny and assault with a dangerous weapon, West said.
