If your Fourth of July plans include popping some fireworks, take those plans outside of Oklahoma City's city limits.
As the holiday weekend approaches, Oklahoma City officials are reminding residents it is illegal to sell, buy, possess, manufacture or use fireworks in Oklahoma City.
Sparklers, snakes, bottle rockets and all other popular fireworks are included in the ban.
Violators are subjected to a $167 fine plus court fees, with the fireworks being confiscated. Police and the fire marshal's office enforce the ban, which has been in effect for more than 30 years.
“The Oklahoma City Fire Marshal's Office wants all of our residents to have a safe and enjoyable holiday,” said Deputy Fire Chief Kellie Sawyers. “Leaving fireworks to the professionals and enjoying a public display is a wonderful way to celebrate our country's birthday.”
Oklahoma City officials do allow permits for large public shows operated by professionals.
