OKLAHOMA CITY -

One person is dead following a head-on crash on the northbound side of Interstate 35, near the Dallas junction, on Monday.

Authorities say the car was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of I-35 when it collided with a semi just south of the Dallas junction shortly before 11 a.m.

According to police, detectives had been monitoring the suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Ryan Otto Whitworth, from Midwest City. Investigators say Whitworth had prior convictions and was being investigated for multiple crimes.

As detectives followed the vehicle, they ran the license plate and it came back stolen. The detectives called for a cruiser to come and pull the suspect over. The requested police officer initiated a traffic stop near the 1700 block of I-40 in the westbound lanes.

During the stop, Whitworth took off and eventually traveled westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-40, where he merged onto I-35 going the wrong way. He attempted to exit at SE 15th St. when he collided with the semi. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police tell News 9 that a chase was never initiated during this incident.

The crash caused authorities to shut down all lanes on NB I-35 while crews worked the scene.

The condition of the semi driver is not known at this time.
