Energy FC Tops Tulsa, Wins Seventh Straight

Posted: Updated:

Behind goals from Danni König and Gareth Evans, OKC Energy FC downed Tulsa Roughnecks FC 2-0 for its seventh consecutive win and regained first place in the USL's Western Conference Saturday night at Taft Stadium. OKC goal keeper Evan Newton recorded his fifth straight clean sheet.

Though Tulsa had several quality chances early on, Energy FC struck first when König netted his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 27th minute. OKC's Kyle Greig moved the ball into the Tulsa six-yard box and attempted a shot that deflected off two Tulsa defenders and right to König, who redirected the ball past Roughnecks keeper Zac Lubin for a 1-0 OKC lead.

After taking the 1-0 advantage into the half, Energy FC extended its lead early in the second when Evans scored his first goal in two seasons with OKC, heading a Chuy Sanchez corner kick from the left side just inside the right post. The goal was the second of Evans's USL career, with his only other coming as a member of Wilmington Hammerheads FC in the 2012 season. His coach during that season was current Tulsa head coach David Irving.

Both keepers made the majority of their saves in the second half, with Lubin denying three quality chances by König in the half and making a fingertip save on an 18-yard free kick by OKC's Chuy Sanchez in the 78th minute. Tulsa made a late run, registering three of its four shots on goal in the second half, but was unable to put a shot past Newton, who made two diving saves in the final 20 minutes of play.

With the win, OKC improved to 7-2-3 on the season and 17-16-8 in the two-year history of the franchise, climbing above the .500 mark for the first time since April 12, 2014, after the club won two of its first three matches. Energy FC holds a one point advantage over second place Seattle in the Western Conference, with Seattle idle until June 20.

Energy FC next travels to Ft. Worth, Texas, where they face the MLS's FC Dallas in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, at Texas Christian University's Garvey-Rosenthal soccer complex.
