OKLAHOMA CITY -

One metro man was hit head-on in his driveway, knocked off his feet by a car while gardening. The driver took off and now the victim's family is desperate to track down who was behind the wheel.

Victor Karban has been hospitalized for the past three days. The hit-and-run left him with a broken neck, back and a fracture in his forehead.

Jackie Karban said it's now painful to look at her garden near Northwest 17th and Kentucky Ave. since her husband of 37 years nearly lost his life when a car catapulted him into it.

"He turned around and got hit, and you can see I'm not very far from the curb," Karban said.

Karban said Monday morning around 10, her husband was spraying water on the flowers right next to her when a gold-colored Ford SUV ran right into him and split his head open.

“I thought he was dead.”

Victor Karban was unconscious, covered in blood as the SUV sped through the stop sign. Jackie Karban said she tried to flag down the driver and yell for help but she didn't get a license plate number. A neighbor caught a quick description of the car as Jackie called 911.

Victor has several broken bones in his face, a cracked skull and multiple fractures in his right hip where there's internal bleeding.

"He's 72-years-old, and this is not something that he's going to heal very fast from, we're thankful he's alive," she said.

Oklahoma City Police detectives are investigating. The Ford's side view mirror and a piece of its headlamp were tossed among the flowers.

Karban blames herself for making her husband tend the garden with her.

“What hurts me the most is the person is the person drove off, what hurts me the second is I had told him to do what he was doing."

Victor Karban is still being treated for his multiple injuries but is expected to recover. He is now being transferred out of the ICU.

If you have any information of the hit-and-run driver, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 405-235-7300.
