MOORE, Oklahoma -

Locked inside her home by her boyfriend, a Moore woman feared for her life. He even allegedly chased her around with a hatchet and a loaded gun.

A concerned call from the woman's ex-husband sent police out to the Moore home last Friday. She'd told him her boyfriend was "acting crazy"

The lights off, doors locked, and hatchet in hand. Moore police say that's how 32-year-old Roger Juliano tortured his girlfriend last Friday.

Once at the home on Lonnie Lane, police yelled through an open window to check on the woman. She came outside showing officers the cut on her leg. With their guns drawn, two Moore officers searched room by room for Juilano.

“But eventually found him hiding between two mattress with the mattress over him. He was naked at the time,” said Sgt. Jeremy Lewis, Moore Police.

And clutched in his hands were the hatchet and a loaded handgun.

“He surrendered without any incident even though he had weapons on him,” said Lewis.

Court documents show last Thursday a woman filed a protective order against Juilano. For the girlfriend's protection she was never identified in the police affidavit. But YWCA chief program officer says restraining orders against abusive partners can often lead to more violence.

“When a perpetrator threatens a victim, their risk exponentially increases,” said Kristi Mitchell, YWCA.

And Mitchell says this woman was lucky to escape this situation with just a cut. That's because Oklahoma ranks third in the nation for women killed by men; a rank the state holds for a second year in a row.

“It's really important that victims recognize this is dangerous and they start making a plan for their safety,” Mitchell said.

Roger Juilano is now charged with domestic abuse with a deadly weapon. Juliano also had warrants out of Cleveland County for drug possession.
