A man died after he crashed his vehicle while leading Oklahoma City police officers on a chase Wednesday night.
According to police, at 9:25 p.m., officers responded to the report of a domestic disturbance with shots fired in the 6600 block of S. Harvey. However, when officers arrived at the scene, the suspect sped away in his vehicle with a passenger inside.
The officers attempted to stop the fleeing vehicle by engaging their overhead lights. Police said the driver briefly pulled over, but he sped away again going south on Santa Fe. That's when the pursuit began.
During the pursuit, officers said the suspect vehicle ran off the roadway near the 7900 block of S. Santa Fe. It then struck a utility pole, crashed through a fence, and then rolled multiple times, causing the driver to be thrown out of the vehicle.
The driver, later identified as 31-year-old John Estrada, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Estrada was not wearing a seat belt.
Estrada's passenger was his grandmother. She was transported to an area hospital where she was treated for injuries related to the crash and is expected to recover.
