OKLAHOMA CITY -

After 88 years as the Redskins, students at Capitol Hill High School have a new mascot. The Oklahoma City school board voted for the change back in December.

“We have the opportunity to do something with our school that only usually happens when the school opens,” said Curtis Phillips, faculty at CHHS.

The anticipation and excitement could be seen on the face of students anxiously waiting for the big reveal. The decision to be the Capitol Hill Red Wolves or Guardians came down to a narrow vote by the students.

But students voted to be the Capitol Hill Red Wolves. A decision was welcomed by most of the students with cheers.

“There are some people that maybe holding a little grudge and they still yell out Redskins here and there, but after a while some people just start getting on board and go with the Red Wolves,” said Capitol Hill junior Brett Jacobs.

The call for a mascot change came nearly six months ago and was followed by a controversial vote by the OKCPS school board to remove the Redskins mascot.

That vote was met with immediate push back by current and former students. The district said the term was offensive to some of its student, but not all agreed.

“We're not forgetting our history but it is but it actually a second chapter of the Capitol Hill High School history,” said Phillips.

Over the summer, the district will work to replace the old mascot logos around the school with the new Red Wolves logo. Many of the items around school with the Redskins mascot or name will be auctioned off to raise money to purchase items with the new mascot on it.
