A lockdown has been lifted at six Norman schools Thursday afternoon. Authorities continue to investigate reports of a suicidal person armed with a pistol, but believe he is no longer within the vicinity of the schools.
According to police, at about 11:20 a.m., officers received reports of a man armed with a pistol in the area of Boyd Street and Classen Blvd. The 911 caller said the person may be suicidal.
Authorities then locked down a nearby school, Lincoln Elementary School located at 915 Classen.
At approximately 12:25 p.m., police officers responded to a second report of an armed man near Washington Elementary. That information resulted in the lockdown of Washington Elementary, as well as Jefferson Elementary, Longfellow Middle School, Reagan Elementary and Irving Middle School.
After a thorough search, police did not apprehend a suspect at either location, but continue to investigate both incidents.
At about 2 p.m., school officials lifted the lockdown at all six schools. Although the individual has not been apprehended, Norman police said they no longer believe he is in the vicinity of these schools.
Norman Public Schools Superintendent Joseph Siano said the man was never seen on school grounds.
