A 15-year-old traffic ticket nearly came back to bite a Norman woman. She claims she paid her fine all those years ago, but the Oklahoma County Clerk said court records indicate otherwise.
Julie Eades received a warrant for her arrest in the mail back in March. It regarded a speeding infraction from 2000. Eades insists she paid her $133 fine in cash back then.
Oklahoma County Clerk Tim Rhodes said she didn't. He said Oklahoma County tries to collect outstanding fines when it can, and he said it is “a significant” amount of money.
Julie Eades went ahead and appeared in front of a judge earlier this week; she paid her fine, and got a load off her mind.
“I went through the anger and frustration and then just scared,” she said.
Rhodes said a change in state law ten years ago allows jurisdictions to use private collections agencies to go after outstanding balances. “There's a tremendous amount of dollars that are out there and still owed,” he said.
