OHP Releases Dash Cam Video Of Trooper Helping Mother Following Accidental Shooting

Video from an OHP trooper's unexpected traffic stop last Wednesday, was released Tuesday. A panicked mother was trying to rush her bleeding 2-year-old to the ER following an accidental shooting.

The 2-year-old boy found a loaded gun inside his mother's purse last week. The accidental shot went through his left arm. And instead of calling for help, his mother decided to drive him to the hospital.

The frantic mother rolled through a stop sign then sped down Highway 99 catching the attention of Trooper Troy Thompson who was in the area patrolling.

From his dash cam, you see him make a U-turn then pursue the silver Dodge Durango. A few seconds later, you see the mother driving the SUV finally pull over.

“He got a hold of my purse. He shot through his arm, we're headed to the emergency room,” the mother explained to Trooper Troy Thompson.

In the back seat Trooper Thompson saw the bleeding toddler and knew he needed to get the child help fast.

“I'm not going to escort you but I am going to follow you there ok? Stay there I'm going to be in front of you,” Trooper Thompson told the mother.

Trooper Thompson led the mother through traffic and a construction zone, coordinating with the Pottawatomie County Dispatchers for traffic updates.

“She'll be in route with that vehicle. I'm escorting a small gunshot victim going to the ER,” he told dispatch.

At the St. Anthony's hospital in Shawnee a team of doctors was standing by ready for the toddler.

Through the back windshield of Trooper Thompson's car you can him grab the injured toddler and rush him into the hospital.

The Pottawatomie County DA's office declined to press charges against the mother, so investigators are ruling the shooting an accident.
