Chickasha Woman Who Ran Over, Killed Husband Still Not Arrested

Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) troopers continue investigating a bizarre accident from Sunday, where a woman ran over her husband, killing him. Detectives say the Chickasha woman smelled of alcohol, but was never arrested.

OHP says there are many instances where drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol are arrested on the spot, but say this case is different and needs more review.

It's heartbreak for the family of 24-year-old Pete Gonzales. Police say he died along State Highway 9 near Carnegie around 4 a.m. on Sunday when his wife, Whitney Gonzales, ran him over.

"He's our baby brother and she's supposed to be his wife. How could she do this?" said Pete's sister, Jessica Gonzales.

Whitney told police she and Pete argued after leaving her mother's house in Kiowa County. Pete started walking along the highway and Whitney drove around looking for him until she smashed right into him. Investigators say Whitney smelled of alcohol.

“We're really upset. We don't understand why she hasn't been arrested," Jessica said.

OHP hasn't said if Whitney was given a sobriety test. They have received reports that she left the scene.

"It was my understanding that she did not have a cell phone with her at the time of the crash occurred, so she went to the nearest police station and reported it and went back to the scene," said OHP Capt. Paul Timmons.

Whitney was given a blood test, which will determine if she was under the influence of any substance at the time of the crash. Blood test results could take anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks depending on the backlog at OSBI.

Meanwhile, Pete's family wants justice now. They say the Chickasha couple had an abusive relationship, claiming Whitney had punched Pete multiple times in the past, giving him black eyes. Pete's sister feels the crash was no accident and she hurts for the 2-year-old and 7-month-old daughters Pete leaves behind.

"He was the sweetest kid. He was always soft-spoken. He was very shy. He had a big heart and he loved his girls." Jessica said.

For now, the couple's children are staying at their grandmother's house in Kiowa County.
