OKLAHOMA CITY -

Their job is to serve and protect, but four Oklahoma City Police officers were honored for going above and beyond the call of duty. News 9 shared their stories with you last month and Wednesday; all four were given a special "Lifesaver Award."

News 9 first told you about the daring and cold rescue made by Master Sergeants Jimmy Parsons and JR Northrup in April. Strong winds on Lake Hefner overturned a kayak leaving a woman treading to save her life for nearly an hour.

“Her screams were pretty much what drove me to go out and get her,” said Master Sergeant JR Northrup, OCPD.

The next night, News 9 shared the story of Officers Davin Boyett and Jeff Dutton. A welfare call to check on a car parked after hours in the park led to the discovery of a homeless family of five living in their vehicle. The two men filled up the mother's car with gas, purchased toys for the kiddos and took them to a shelter.

“And that's the beauty of the job right there. I mean it's fun to go chase bad guys get in to things,” Officer Davin Boyett, OCPD.

A month later, Officer Boyett still smiles thinking about that night.

“When we see stuff like this we feel that woodmen should do what they do and recognize these brave men,” he said.

Wednesday, Woodmen of the World, a not for profit insurance company, honored these four men.

“It's one of those things about being a police officer that I really enjoy,” said MSgt Northrup.

“A lot of the call are just so negative it's great to have a positive call to kind of up lift your spirits and maybe uplift the spirits of others,” said officer Boyett.
