OKLAHOMA CITY -

The severe weather brought a slew of cancellations for after-school events and activities. The threat of storms even canceled the OU graduation.

Several school districts including Norman and Mid-Del called off events citing the week's series of severe weather as enough reason.

The Girls' State tennis tournament was to take place Friday night but severe weather won, and the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association called it off.

OSSAA canceled several events including two state and regional track meets expecting 20,000 people, and a state baseball tournament playoff series to be played at a Dolese Park diamond that caught a downpour.

“We've got some history to back up the decision, and you know sometimes we don't know when things are going to happen, but in this situation, you certainly have some data that indicated that this was very predictable and that we could be in a very dangerous situation,” Amy Cassell, OSSAA assistant director.

Another tough call was for Oklahoma City Public Schools to cancel all its activities through Sunday; including three high school proms.

"So we want to make sure that our parents and our students are safe, so they're not concerned and wondering how their students are if they're out at prom," said Deivi Blanco-Santizo, OKC Public Schools.

School officials reviewed weather updates and decided to put out the call saying all after school evening activities had been cancelled.

"We want to make sure that our kids are always safe, that are parents and our staff are always safe, so regardless if the bad weather is coming or not, we always want to be proactive and not take those chances," Blanco-Santizo said.

The three schools with cancelled proms will now have to determine a rescheduled date on top of other end-of-the-year events. The last day of school is May 29.
