Severe Weather Causes Road Closures In Central Oklahoma

Severe storms are causing flash flooding for most of central Oklahoma. As a result, several roads and highways are becoming impassable.

In Oklahoma City, S. Council Rd between 112th and 119th, SW 29th and S. Sara Rd, and N. Midwest Blvd. from NE 50th to NE 63rd are closed due to flash flooding. Also, S. Hiawassee Rd. from SE 74 to SE 89, SW 44 and S. Morgan, and S. Sante Fe Ave. from SE 28 to SE 27.

Portland was flooded between N.W. 150th and N.W. 164th Streets as of Friday.

In El Reno, Highway 81 was reportedly impassible due to flooding as of Friday night.

In Del City, Sunnylane Rd between E. Reno and NE4th was impassible as of Friday night.

Saturday evening, the City of Norman said the following roads were closed:

  • 120th Avenue NE and Gander Road
  • 180th Avenue SE south of State Highway 9
  • Indian Hills Road (Between 36th Avenue NE through 48th Avenue NE)
  • Rock Creek Rd (Between 156th Ave Ne and 168th Ave NE)
  • 9400 block of E. Tecumseh Road
  • 120th Avenue SE and Cedar Lane Road
  • 180th Ave NE at Tecumseh Road
  • 48 Ave NW between Robinson and Rock Creek Road

For Saturday evening in Norman utility crews have allowed 48th Avenue NW between Robinson Street and Saddleback Blvd to be opened. Due to damaged utility lines and flooding, 48th Ave NW between Saddleback Blvd and Rock Creek Rd Remains closed. This will be in effect until approximately 7 a.m. Sunday.

Starting Sunday morning in Norman at approximately 7 a.m., 48th Ave NW will continue to be closed between Robinson Street and Rock Creek Road to through traffic. The primary utility company completing the work has confirmed that residents of the neighborhood within the area will continue to have access to their residences while repairs continue on 48th.

ODOT reported the on-ramp to westbound I-40 at Council Road was closed Saturday afternoon temporarily due to high water.

Also in Norman, the bridges at 120th Ave NE and Gander Road and the bridge at 180th Ave SE south of Highway 9 were washed out.

Moore Police said the intersections of SE 34th and Sunnylane and Indian Hills and Eastern were flooded and impassable. Also, roads at SE 4th and Bryant near Veteran's Park, SE 19th St. and eastern, NW 12th and Janeway and City. The gates at 34th were completely closed.

Southbound I-235 was down to one lane at the exit near 63rd because of flooding.

Power lines were down near 48th Avenue N.W. and blocked the roadway north of Robinson in Norman.The City of Yukon reported East Wagner and Yukon Parkway at Legacy Lakes were closed due to flooding.

The emergency director in Pottawatomie said Highway 59-B west to east was flooded. Residents are asked to avoid the area.
