Neighbors Take Unusual Action To Catch Brazen Bicycle Thieves

A group of young men go on a crime spree on the far northwest side of the city stealing a number of bicycles in broad daylight.

Neighbors followed the suspects after the brazen thefts before they were finally caught and arrested by Oklahoma City police.

It was just after 3 p.m. last Thursday when police say the group decided to go around the area stealing bikes right out of garages and front yards. But, homeowners didn't let them get away with it.

“Lady across the street said that two gentlemen came up to her, asked for some money, and she said, no we don't have any money for you,” said Alysia Davenport.

Davenport says their plan was to distract what was about to happen across the street at her parents' home.

"And then she just looks over and two other gentlemen grab my bike and my nephew's bike and all four of them ran off," said Davenport.

Alysia's nephew, 11-year-old Caleb Ringwald, had just gotten off the school bus.

"I was just walking home and I saw them on my bike and my aunt's bike," said Ringwald.

That's when Caleb confronted the men.

"He said that he has one just like mine, and I said it was my bike, and he said, ‘No, I have one just like it,'" said Ringwald.

"It's very concerning knowing that they just walked up in the middle of the afternoon just to take some bikes and just run off with them," said Davenport.

One neighbor told police during the heist he witnessed 19-year-old Tobyon Brown walk into his garage, and walk out with a mountain bike as he mowed a neighbor's lawn across the street.

According to court documents, after approaching the young men, he was then threatened by 20-year-old Denico Cheadle saying, "I'll come back and shoot you."

Brown then said, "I make a living stealing."

One neighbor says she found one of the men in her backyard and tried to tackle him.

All four men were eventually caught and arrested.
