Racist Vandalism Found On Downtown Garage

Hateful words were spotted from downtown skyscrapers Monday morning. Vandals defaced the top floor of a 9-story parking garage over the weekend.

Racist tagging sprayed on top of a parking garage had crews scrambling to cover up the hateful message Monday.

To those who could see the vandalism, they called it repulsive, disgusting and despicable. Hateful words and symbols painted on top of the Walker and Sheridan parking garage in view of anyone who works in nearby downtown high rises.

“Oh yeah, it's terrible,” said Debi Holtzclaw with the Central Oklahoma Transportation and Parking Authority.

A swastika and a crude message to police was painted with a broom using supplies left behind by construction crews over the weekend.

“We were replacing the top deck and we had the contractor stop during the arts festival so we could allow people to park up here,” said Holtzclaw.

She says the vandalism began Friday night and more popped up over the weekend.

“We know we had an incident Friday evening. They came over and covered it up,” she said.

Now tarps cover up the offensive messages -- not the typical tagging seen in downtown Oklahoma City

“No, No. It's not. It's sad,” said Holtzclaw.

Sad, but something the city already tried covering up last week. Another swastika painted with racist messages was found under the NW 5th street bridge, but Holtzclaw isn't sure how much it's going to cost to clean up the rooftop mess.

There are no security cameras on top of the garage, but the garage owners are working with police to catch the vandals.
