It's the season of moving and many people will hire a company to transport their belongings. However, beware of a common moving scam. According to ConsumerReports.org, some companies will move your stuff, then park the truck outside and demand more money than you expected. If you don't pay up, they hold your possessions hostage until you do.

The scam is based on a law known as Mover's Lien. It basically protects the movers in case the customer does not pay what they are owed. If this happens, the moving company can sell the customer's belongings. While law has good intentions to protect the moving company, some companies are abusing it. Here's an example. A moving company may give you a low-ball estimate to hook you, and then hit you with unexpected fees and a much higher price. The customer is left to pay a lot more money or forfeit their stuff.

However, here are some tips to prevent you from being a victim of a moving scam.
