Two men are on the run. One of them stole an SUV taking another man for a ride on the hood.

That victim hangs on for his life and now police need help tracking down the suspects.

Tyrone Stafford admitted to police he left the keys in the SUV, and quickly ran in and out the store.

But that quick trip inside turned into a wild ride on the roof of his own car, and it's all caught on camera.

Tyrone Stafford drove up to the front door of a convenience store near Northeast 23rd and MLK and walked inside.

It appeared he left the car running.

Then, another camera angle showed two suspects pull up in what police believed was a white Chevrolet Impala.

Two men got out of the vehicle, one wearing orange, the other blue.

The guy in orange waited around the gas pumps.

But the man in blue walked around the car, and took a few looks inside before he made his way back around, jumped in the driver's seat, and took off.

But the timing could not have been more spot on. Tyrone walked out and immediately jumped on the hood. His mother, Marsha Johnson thinks she knows why.

“He probably panicked, because that's my mamma's car, so I'm sure he freaked out, like that's grandma's car,” said Tyrone's mother, Marsha Johnson.

And it turned into the ride of his life.

“I go to that store all the time, and I'm like nervous and scared now,” said Johnson. “I mean, people can just take your car.”

Tyrone told police the suspect took off down the street going at least 50 miles per hour for about a mile.

Eventually the suspect slammed on the brakes, knocking Tyrone to the ground, then sped off.

“He could have been killed,” said Johnson. “My son could be dead now.”

Tyrone's mother said the SUV was found abandoned without a battery or tires.

Police said Tyrone has road rash and several broken teeth.

Police urge all of us to never leave our vehicles unattended with the keys inside, even for a moment.

If you recognize the men in the surveillance video, call Crime Stoppers at 405-235-7300.
