Students at Star Spencer High School are grieving after they tragically lost one of their classmates.

Christopher Johnson, 18, was gunned down near his home and police are trying to figure out why.

Those who knew Chris described him as a quiet young man with a big smile.

“You don't expect somebody you know, know of, just be gone like that,” said Star Spencer student, Elijah McDonald.

At Christopher's Midwest City home, his car sat in the driveway. Close friends of the Star Spencer student said it wasn't running so he was walking to and from work at night.

But Monday night was his last trip.

Around 11:30, police said Chris was walking home from Spencer. Someone shot and killed him just a block from his home.

“I can't put it into words, really. It's just I have no explanation. It's just shocking really,” said Start Spencer student, Lazarus Hennesy.

“It's just really like depressing. I mean, I don't know what else to say, besides what else can we do to stop it from happening to someone else?” Star Spencer student Michael Owens asked.

Police said there's a strong possibility Chris was in ESA park before he was shot.

He appeared to have run out in the street across from the park where he collapsed on the southbound lane on Spencer Road near N.E. 15th Street.

“It's not supposed to happen,” said McDonald. “If you thought something like that could happen, you would try to prevent it, but, you never know.”

Chris' mother was too grief-stricken to talk on camera. Neighbors told News 9 Chris was her only child.

“It's just devastating,” said McDonald.

“People just feel bad and they're hurt. I'm hurt. I didn't know him really well, but it's just like loss of family,” said Owens. “That's how it is.”

Police said they are still looking for answers and a suspect in Chris' murder.

A silver or grey extended cab pickup truck was seen in the area prior to the shooting, according to a witness.

If anyone has any information, you're asked to call Midwest City police.
