My 2 Cents: Use Of Force Vs. Police Restraint

Last week I credited a Tucson area officer for his decisive, if unconventional methods, when he roared past another officer and mowed down an armed suspect who was refusing police orders to lay down his weapon. In fact he'd fired it into the air in front of them.

On the flip side of that, this arrest in Ohio, where an officer confronts a man wanted for murdering his fiancé then murdering his friend, but the man seems intent on committing suicide by cop.

The rookie officer, a former Marine, refuses to shoot the suspect even after the suspect rushes him with his hand in his pocket.

Ironically, it was all picked up on the body cam his family purchased for him after the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Missouri.

At one point it shows the officer go down on his back after his feet get tangled up, and the suspect keeps coming.

The suspect finally gave up after a second unit arrived, and now the rookie cop is being credited for his restraint.

But I have to ask the question: Has all the controversy surrounding the recent use of police force caused some officers to err too far on the other side?

This guy could have shot him with his hand in his jacket pocket. Turns out he wasn't armed, but he easily could have been and was thought to be.

What would we be talking about it he'd shot the officer and went on to murder somebody else?

I'm Kelly Ogle and that's My 2 Cents.
