A jury has been seated in the Chancey Luna murder trial in Duncan.

Luna is facing murder charges in the death of Australian baseball player Christopher Lane.

The trial is moving a lot faster than many expected.

Opening statements began earlier Tuesday afternoon and the state has already called its first witness.

The state called this crime a senseless tragic taking of a young man's life.

The defense said the action of Chancey Luna was not murder, but a horrible, horrible judgment call made by a 16-year-old child without any malice aforethought.

But Luna is charged with the First Degree Murder of Australian baseball player Christopher Lane back in 2013. The state's key witness has already taken the stand.

James Edwards Jr. is charged with Accessory after the Fact in the crime, and was in the car with Luna the time Luna allegedly shot and killed Lane.

Edwards testified that he never saw the gun, but when he heard a loud bang he turned to Luna and described Luna's face as cold and not having much expression.

Edwards also stated that once he realized Lane had been shot, he didn't say anything because he was confused and didn't know what to say.

Then Edwards said after the boys got out of the vehicle, Luna said to the driver of the car, Michael Jones, "I thought there were blanks in the gun."

Edwards then stated he heard Jones say, "Me too, I'm sorry."

Nearly 20 members of Lane's family and friends were present in court Tuesday, as well as Luna's mom, brother and grandparents.

Luna's grandpa Rick has not spoken to the Lane's but they are in his thoughts throughout this process.

“I'm truly sorry. Our prayers are with them,” Chancey's grandpa said.

Jones has already pleaded guilty to Second Degree Murder and is serving life in prison.

If found guilty, Luna could serve life without parole.
