Family Of Now Paralyzed OKC Shooting Victim Hopes Justice Will Be Served

An Oklahoma City man was left paralyzed, after he was robbed and shot while he was out for a morning walk.

Oklahoma City police were called to the scene, near S.W. 31st Street and Virginia Avenue just before 7 a.m. Friday.

Police identified the victim as Raul Marquez, 67, of south Oklahoma City.

He was rushed to an Oklahoma City hospital and was listed in serious condition, at last check.

His wife Mercedes Hernandez said he was just out on his daily morning walk; collecting cans to raise some cash when someone demanded his wallet, and then shot him.

She said he was well-loved in the southwest Oklahoma City community and did not have any problems with anybody in this area. He lived just a mile away from where he was shot and Friday police did not have a good suspect description. Raul's wife said he has been collecting cans in the neighborhood for years as a way to earn money for his family, since a car accident a while back left him disabled and unable to work.

And neighbors said the predominately Hispanic area usually feels pretty safe.

That was why they were shocked to hear about what happened to Marquez.

“He was a really good guy nice guy,” said neighbor Areceli Hernandez.

Mercedes Hernandez was still in shock Friday afternoon over what happened to her husband.

The phone hasn't stopped ringing all day as friends and family continue to call to check in on her and to find out what happened to Marquez.

Police said a neighbor near the crime scene heard the gunshot and came out to see what had happened. That neighbor discovered Marquez lying in the street and called 911 for help.

Now that he is left paralyzed, his wife said she doesn't know what they are going to do to survive.

All she wants is for the man who shot her husband to be caught, and for justice to be served.

Mercedes Hernandez said she wishes the gunman had just taken her husband's wallet and ran, instead of robbing him of his ability to walk.

She said she knows he didn't put up a fight and that the crook probably only got away with less than $30.

And now they will be facing tens of thousands of dollars in medical costs alone.
