State investigators are working to identify the person found dead along I-40 near Hinton and warned it could be weeks before circumstances surrounding the case are released.

Authorities believe the body was out there for a while based on how badly it had decomposed.

An Oklahoma Department of Transportation worker was clearing cedar brush from the area near mile marker 103, Tuesday when he found the body.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), Caddo County Sheriff's Deputies, and Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troopers surrounded the area.

Investigators found what some believe, was the body of a woman. She was wearing nothing but socks.

"We collected information from the scene, and evidence, but we still really need to identify this person it's very important for us to continue on with the investigation," said Jessica Brown, OSBI spokesperson.

The medical examiner is currently performing an autopsy. In the meantime, OSBI agents are doing what they can," one of the things we can do right now without having an identity is look through missing persons cases not only in that area but maybe branch out a little bit farther," Brown said.

The OSBI is also encouraging anyone who is missing a loved one to contact the OSBI tipline 1-800-522-8017
