A father-son duo was arrested and accused of stealing from Mustang Public Schools (MPS).

Investigators said the district's long-time plumber and his son may have been stealing from MPS for years.

Investigators with the Canadian County Sheriff's Office said Melvin Hibbs, the district's plumber, admitted to everything. And they said he told them he doesn't feel bad at all about stealing school equipment.

Investigators believe the 55-year-old may have been stealing from MPS for more than a decade.

“He took advantage of his employer and actually stole from them. He's stealing from the hand that's feeding them,” said Canadian County Undersheriff, Chris West.

Three weeks ago the Canadian County Sheriff's Office was contacted by MPS.

It said someone came forward after getting property with Mustang schools clearly marked on it.

“Pretty quick [sic], we realized that the thefts actually did originate from the Mustang High School area,” said West.

West said more than 30 pieces of stolen equipment were found at the apartment of Melvin's son, 27-year-old Kyle Hibbs. Most of it was taken from a storage unit on the campus of Mustang High School.

Aside from plumbing equipment, investigators found district computers, a carpet shampooer, and other supplies used for day-to-day school operations.

“We know that Melvin was the one that was taking them, so he was charged with four counts of larceny,” said West.

Investigators said Melvin tells them he doesn't feel too bad about the thefts, because as a plumber, he doesn't make enough money anyway.

“So he was kind of trying to justify the thefts of all this stuff, so, you know that doesn't work, that doesn't cut it for all of us,” said West.

Melvin surrendered Thursday, posted bond and was out of a job.

Melvin's son Kyle remains in jail on a $40,000 bond on a complaint of Receiving Stolen Property.

He has a prior conviction for Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon.
