The Oklahoma National Guardsman lost his leg in an explosion in Afghanistan. This week, John Hill got the keys to his brand new, mortgage-free home.

“I was really surprised at what it actually looked like,” said Hill.

The 22-year-old was injured when an IED exploded by his vehicle in Afghanistan four years ago.

“My foot bone was completely shattered, everything in my foot, so I had a couple of reconstructive surgeries on it, tried to save it from being amputated for two and a half years,” Hill told News 9.

The amputation finally happened last year. Hill is a Purple Heart recipient and reached out to the Military Warriors Support Foundation, which awards mortgage-free homes to wounded heroes injured during combat.

The group acquired the home, renovated it, stocked it with brand new appliances and made modifications for John's wheelchair.

"I realized that there are people who care and are willing to help you out, so it's awesome,” Hill said.

This is not the only new addition for John and his girlfriend, Hailee Barber. They are expecting their first child in July and a mortgage-free home is a blessing.

"It's a huge gift, huge,” said Barber. “It takes a lot off our backs with the baby coming,” she added.

Hill said he is humbled others are serving him after he served his country.

“It's just awesome that there are people out there who help veterans and do these types of things and I'm just so grateful for it, like I can't thank them enough,” Hill explained.

The last thing Military Warriors has to do is build Hill a wheelchair ramp leading up to his front door.

As part of the program, Hill is also in a 3-year mentoring program that helps him get his finances in order so he is financially stable as his family grows.
